How to choose the right tax software program - March 31, 2008

Tax software is more and more preferred in these days to file taxes for both individuals and small businesses in a do-it-yourself manner. More and more vendors enter the market as the demand for tax software is on the rise. With the variety of different programs available it is important to knaow that not all tax software is “one size fits all”.

Reading and comparing software reviews on websites and in magazines is one of the most common approaches in determining which tax software is suitable for you. Since the prices and features vary greatly among the different vendors it’s imperative that consumers take their time to compare these things. But what should you look for?

Features: Review the features of each program to find the one that meets your personal needs best. A property owner would need support for investments, home improvements, rental properties and home businesses. Someone who donates on a regular basis will have to seek for a software program that supports charitable contributions. Don’t buy a software just because of features you are in no need of.

Price: The price range goes from as low as $14.99 up to well over $100.00 for tax software. Take the time to find other programs having the same or at least similar features and compare the prices. And keep in mind that cheap does not always mean poor quality and expensive does not always mean best quality!

Customer support: This is something you should pay close attention to. Some vendors will offer email support with tax professionals while others may even offer free phone support. You can find tax software programs that even offer free audit protection.

Most of the review sites you can find only only take a small selection of programs into account. You could be missing out some of the opinions of taxpayers who have used one of the many other programs available if you only rely on one review site. Programs that are not listed on one of the mainstream review sites can be more suitable to some taxpayers so be sure to take some time and investigate on your own! This make your tax season a lot less stressful.
